Jason Hsu’s series Holy Shmoly continues with this third hit as another colorful barrage erratic and surprising. The collection presents the page as pure potential leaving optical sensory filters behind and invites us to trip with this hilarious visual trauma as thick caverns of coral like misconfigurations flourish abound melting mutated quasi-plankton-esque colonies. Through out the volume is a focused play between tight and loose rendering as if mimicking a consciousness that recalls different isolated moments that range from foggy and confusingly quick to hyper informed with maximum detail infused. Get in it and don’t wait for the punch line hi-five!

Hsu, a member of Space 1026 since 2006, is a master of cardboard construction and manipulation. His collaborative show ‘Paper Crystals’ with Chris Kline in 2008 at Pageant Galleryin Philadelphia liberated the refuse and propelled their constructs into a realm of fantastical comic absurdity. He has self-published two previous volumes of Holy Shmoly presenting his sketchbook drawing in wonderful screen-printed bliss.
